Project Details
Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) possesses a rich heritage of data spanning the entire era of research, encompassing both modern electronic formats and analogue ones (paper, books, charts, maps,) or primitive magnetic tapes.
There is a rich repository of statistical information (census, survey and Geo Code) in these mainframe tapes, dating back to late 1970s and early 1999s. One of the strategic goals of the NSDS in Bangladesh relates to data archiving which ultimately hopes to consolidate a data disseminating and sharing system. Data recovery and conversion from mainframe EBCDIC into ASCII is a big step towards dissemination of Big Data covering Bangladesh’s economic developmental trend.
Major Tasks/Assignments
Metadata
unstructured to structured data
There are many data in both structured and unstructured form. The structured data are from many sources like, CS Pro, Access, Excel, Stata & FoxPro. On the other hand, there are many unstructured data as well which needs to be converted into structured format prior to migrating the datasets.
Metabase Applications
web-based cataloging & metabase applications
Data Cataloging complaint with the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) metadata standards. Data Cataloging serves as a portal for researchers to browse, search, compare, apply for access to relevant census or survey, and download questionnaires, reports and other information basing on a robust Back end Database.
MetaBase serves for researchers to browse, search, compare, apply for access, and download relevant census or survey datasets.
